OpenAI has announced the appointment of David Vélez and Robin Vince to the boards of the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC. Vélez is the founder, Chairman, and Global CEO of Nubank, described as the largest digital bank in Latin America. Vince is Chairman and CEO of BNY, a financial services company. OpenAI said the two executives bring complementary perspectives on how technology can reshape industries and support economic growth.
The company said both leaders have guided global institutions through significant technological and market change. Their experience includes innovation, governance, resilience, and a focus on creating durable value for the people who use their services. OpenAI also said their backgrounds would strengthen the Foundation’s work, citing commitments to philanthropy and nonprofit leadership in healthcare, education, and the arts, as well as experience building institutions intended to expand access and economic opportunity.

Vélez founded Nubank in 2013 after experiencing the cost and complexity of traditional banking in Brazil. He built the company around a digital-first, customer-focused model intended to make financial services simpler, more transparent, and more accessible. Under his leadership, Nubank has grown to more than 135 million customers and expanded access to banking for millions of people. The company is expanding beyond Latin America and into the United States after securing conditional approval to establish a U.S. national bank.
Before founding Nubank, Vélez was a partner at Sequoia Capital focused on Latin America and worked in investment banking and growth equity at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and General Atlantic. He and his wife, Mariel Reyes, lead VélezReyes+, a philanthropic platform focused on democratic governance, education, and other initiatives across Latin America.
Vince has been Chairman and CEO of BNY since 2022. During that period, he has led a broad re-imagination of the company, including simplifying its operating model, accelerating investment in AI and data, and strengthening its culture of innovation and execution. He previously spent 26 years at Goldman Sachs, where he was a partner and member of the Management Committee and held roles including Chief Risk Officer, Treasurer, Head of Operations, COO of the EMEA region, and CEO of Goldman Sachs International Bank. Vince serves on the boards of the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Perelman Performing Arts Center.
