AWS leadership

Dave Treadwell is now Amazon Web Services’ Senior Vice President of Compute and Machine Learning Services. According to Amazon, Treadwell joined the company almost by accident and was one of the coders behind early Windows. He will lead AWS’s compute and machine learning businesses at what Amazon describes as an AI inflection point.

Amazon also described topics covered in its conversation with Treadwell, including his path to Amazon, his decision-making framework, his understanding of customer obsession, and how he winds down. Other listed headlines identify Dave Brown as departing and Treadwell as taking over AWS Compute and ML Services.

Satellite internet in South Africa

Amazon Leo has entered into an agreement with Herotel, South Africa’s largest fixed internet service provider, to launch evry, a satellite internet service expected to debut commercially in 2027. The agreement is Amazon Leo’s first such agreement in Africa.

Evry is intended to connect millions of South Africans in rural areas, farms, and small towns where traditional infrastructure remains impractical and costly. Herotel serves over 350,000 active customers across more than 550 towns and will use its existing local offices for installation and support.
